  • Should resuscitator bags be CE-marked?
The resuscitator bag is a class IIa medical device, so it means that this device should have a CE mark followed by four numbers identifying the Notified Body in order to be commercialized. The reason of such classification is simple: the resuscitator bag can be connected to the external energy source (therapeutic oxygen treatment) that is why it is an active medical device.

  • Is it possible to connect the standard masks to the resuscitator bag?
Yes, if the resuscitator bag was designed and manufactured according to the norm ISO 10651-4-2009.

  • Is it possible to use the ADULT resuscitator bag on children?
Yes, if the mask is suitable for the child. In this case, the pressure applied to the resuscitator bag should be reduced. The standard oval form of the major part of resuscitators allows to apply a minor force on the part of the resuscitator bag with a smaller diameter. The resuscitator bag is manufactured for professional use and it is intended for trained and competent users.  

  • What is the use of the non-return safety valve placed in the mask connector (also known as a “lips-valve”)?
This valve prevents the backflow of fluid substances and exhaled air from the patient to the resuscitator bag. The non-return safety valve is very important, because it opens only when the resuscitator bag is compressed.

  • What is the use of the reservoir?
The reservoir is used as a spare resuscitator bag with oxygen for the patient. It will expend if there is an excess of oxygen or it will release an additional amount of oxygen if needed.

  • What is the use of the valve placed on the opposite side of the patient mask connection?
This special valve can compensate the aspiring air from the environment ensuring proper ventilation if the gas pressure is not sufficient to completely fill the bag.

  • What are the major risks entailed in the use of resuscitator bags?
Hyperventilation of the patient and cross-contamination (for instance, caused by the re-use of the disposable resuscitator bags, which have not been disinfected or sterilized appropriately).

  • What happens if the resuscitator made of PVC or rubber has been sterilized?
The standard steam autoclave sterilization requires a temperature of 136° C or 121° C, which means that PVS or rubber resuscitator bags will fuse at such temperatures.
